Freedom requires action. Listen:
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jn 8:32 NIV
So many people misquote this verse. I have said myself that “the truth will set you free!” But my Friends, do we miss HOW the truth can set us free? Let’s read this verse again, “Then you will know the truth…” Wait, let’s stop there. If we think a lie is truth, then we cannot be set free. We will continue to act upon the lie and continue to stay in the prison that it brings. For instance, like way too many people, I grew up with the message that I was not good enough. It didn’t matter what I accomplished, what I had, what I gave…nothing was ever enough. This speaks to the heart of our identity. And if we believe it is true, that this is WHO we are, then we will either spend our lives here trying to succeed and be better than those around us…or we will just give up and fall into despair and sin.
It was not until I met Jesus, until I surrendered my life to Him, that I first heard clearly, “Behold the Cross! My Love, I say you are good enough!” I would love to say I have been confident in myself ever since then, but I’m not. By God’s Grace, I am working on it though. This is another reason why growing in Christ is vital! Every time I grow, this truth plants itself deeper into my spirit and then I can be free. Free from the…well, let’s continue tomorrow…
