Choosing the Truth

Freedom must be known. Listen:

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jn 8:32 NIV

It is only when we come to the end of ourselves, as the saying goes, that we have a real choice: either we continue along the fruitless path we have been traveling, or we surrender to this Someone who loves us more than life itself, literally! This is where I found myself when Beckie fell into that first coma. She had been diagnosed with brain cancer, but even then I thought I had control over the situation. But when the doctors lifted their hands saying there was nothing else they could do for her, I lifted my hands in surrender to Jesus. I chose at that moment too stop trying to live “my” life on my own. To begin to rely on God and His Love, Grace and Might. When I did that, it was as if a light switch, deep inside of me, turned to the “on” position! For the first time, I had a choice: rely on yourself or other humans to fix the problem or trust God to do what He knows is best.

I am not going to say the road has been smooth since then because it certainly has NOT! But it has been glorious even through the valley of the shadow of death. Knowing that God loves me, that He will never leave my side, that He has already planned every moment of my life here, it not only brings relief and peace and joy, but it frees me to learn to live the life He desires for me. It frees me from having to know it all, as if I ever did. It frees me to just love people instead of…well, more tomorrow.
