God’s Love is perfect!
“‘No one, Lord,’ she answered. ‘Then neither do I condemn you,’ Jesus declared. ‘Now go and sin no more.’” Jn 8:11 BSB
What a huge relief that God is willing to forgive us everything and anything we have ever done that dishonors Him. Sin is disobeying God’s Will, Way and Work. It is God’s Will that everyone would love Him with all we’ve got, and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. We have all fallen short of this goal. God’s Way is to confess we have fallen short and come to Him in repentance to receive forgiveness. God’s Work is for us to surrender to His Son, become indwelled with His Holy Spirit, and then, begin our work to be transformed back into our original image. Whenever we think, say or do anything contrary to this, we sin. Yes, I said even think contrary to God. (see Mt 5:28) No wonder we feel guilty so much.
So imagine again this woman. She was caught right in the act of sin. The guilt and shame when our sin is exposed can cause us to want to crawl under a rock and die. After Jesus rebukes her accusers, she still had to face this Miracle Worker. She may have heard of Him or not. Either way, she did not know what to expect…but she probably did not expect what Jesus said. “Then neither do I condemn you.” Could this be the first time she has ever been exposed to God’s Love? One second her sin was exposed and death seemed eminent. And now? Now what? We will talk about it tomorrow…
