The whole point to Love is that it unifies people. It causes us to live in harmony with one another. It joins us together, not separates us, tearing us apart. So the more we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, the more we will be able to live love. This begins in our hearts by working with the Holy Spirit to discern the thoughts that come to our minds. We do not need to accept every idea as our own. We must learn to capture every thought and, with the Holy Spirit’s help, discern where it came from. We will be able to keep that old Jezebel in the grave as we begin to distinguish her old, dead, useless thoughts from the new life giving, fruitful thoughts the Holy Spirit inspires within us.
For instance, if the thought, “I really hate so and so,” comes to mind, we should be able to know that is not the Holy Spirit, so we stop that thought before it goes any further. That was our old, Jezebel thinking, but now we are New in Christ so we dismiss those types of useless thinking. This requires being alert to what comes to our minds and running to God to drop them when they are not centered on love. I know this requires a lot from us and is deep, but I am not a superficial teacher. I am not going to teach you how to have a happier life. I am going to point you to the Holy Spirit Who will help us have a holier life. One way He does this is by helping us detach from the old way we used to think. He helps us keep that dead old Jezebel… dead, so she will not have any power over us. Since she still has that relationship with sin, if we allow her to influence us, then we will sin.
The mind is so very powerful that Jesus highlighted it as part of the soul, when He was talking about the Greatest Commandment. He says in the Gospel of Mark: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mk 12:30 my emphasis) The mind is where all information enters into us. It is where the Holy Spirit speaks to us before we become born again…and sadly, it is still where the enemy talks to us even after we become born again. He is still trying to take our power away so that we will sin as before. He is still trying to resurrect that old Jezebel in us. He is still trying to steal, kill and destroy us. His purpose is always the opposite of Love: to divide and conquer people.
