Comfortable In Your Own Skin

The next disturbing influence sheep must be freed from is “…tension, rivalry, and cruel competition within the flock itself.” (p46) Sheep who are always vying for status, trying to assert their position in their flock, cannot be content, and so, cannot rest. Same with us humans, right? If we constantly feel this need to prove our own worth within any group, or worse try to place ourselves above anyone else, we will not be able to relax and just enjoy life. The author talks about how an older ewe would bully others who would then scurry for safety…that is, until he came into their presence. “The shepherd’s presence made all the difference in their behavior.” (p47) Does it make a difference in ours?

Humility is the way of our Lord. Mr Keller noticed that, “… the less aggressive sheep were often for more contented, quiet, and restful. So there were definite advantages to being ‘bottom sheep.’” (p49) Being content leads to not having this need to always be at the top. We are comfortable in our own skin, confident in who God says we are. No need to fight and struggle for more. No creating rivalries and being in competition with others. As a matter of fact, as the Lord told me long ago, “The only person you should be in competition with is yourself.” In Christ, we can be better today than we were yesterday. The point is to keep our eyes fixed on God, not others, not this world, and not on ourselves either. He says, “When my eyes are on my Master they are not on those around me. This is the place of peace.” (p49) And this peace is what brings real restful contentment.
