The next part of this wonderful Psalm 23 we will tackle is “I shall not be in want.” Most people will take this as saying we will have everything we want to live a comfortable and pleasurable, easy life here when Jesus is our Shepherd. Can I tell you, that is NOT what these words mean! All we have to do is step out in life a little to understand that fact. The real meaning behind this phrase is contentment. Because I know I can trust my Good Shepherd, no matter what happens, I also know I will be alright. I will hold on to my peace and joy and follow Him wherever He leads. This is the goal. (see 1Ti 6:6) And this contentment is what we grow into as we make Jesus the Lord over our life.
Listen to Mr Keller explain it: “I am completely satisfied with His management of my life. Why? Because He is the sheepman to whom no trouble is too great as He cares for His flock…. For Him there is no greater reward, no deeper satisfaction, then that of seeing His sheep contented, well fed, safe, and flourishing under His care.” (p35) Because it is God’s heart to provide all good things for His Flock, we can be content. These good things, of course, includes situations He allows so we can mature. The hard things of life are what lead us to trust in our Good Shepherd, which leads us to be content as we trust Him with every aspect of our lives. This is a growing thing. Sanctification is vital if we are to “not be in want.” Remember, we are sheep who really do not know what is best for us. But our Shepherd does, and the more we choose to trust this fact, the more we will be content. And if we are content, then we will want for nothing.
