Don’t Worry

One of the problems that rises in our hearts because we do not accurately remember the past, are not completely sure what is going on in the present and have no idea what the future holds is worry. Because we are not God who literally knows all things, we can get anxious about life if we are not growing to totally trust Him. We must learn, as the saying goes, that we do not need to know it all; all we need to know is the One who does know it all. This should give us peace…should. But we are children who are still growing into who we will be, a people who are utterly dependent and trusting of God our Loving Father and Gracious Creator. Until then, worry can try to creep into our hearts and minds. It can try, but when we sense it trying, we can run to God for His assurance that He is in total control as He works all things together for our good.

In Day 19 called “Worry,” the authors talk about the first miracle of Jesus when He turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana. Heeding His mother’s anxious plea, Jesus showed that no request is too insignificant that He will not answer it. These authors say, “We tend to worry about issues large and small, and Jesus cares about each one, especially because of the opportunity they present – but we have to do our part. Like Mary, we have to ask even with seemingly small matters.” (p85) Mary was concerned for the bridal couple because, by herself, she could do nothing to help them avoid the embarrassment. But Jesus can turn our worries into wonders.

The first thing Jesus can do is to take away worrying altogether. I have talked about this before (see link below) but you see, there is a big difference between being worried and being concerned. Worrying is you and me trying to fix what is probably a much bigger issue than we can fix. Being concerned, on the other hand, is us doing what we know we can do towards alleviating the issue, but then praying and trusting God to do the rest. Mary was concerned and ran to Jesus who did what only God can do, take something plain and turn it into something extraordinary. Let’s choose to let Him do this same thing with our concerns too.
