While happy is all about the outside world and people around us, Joy is all about the life inside of us. Joy is based on our relationship with God, a firm confidence that He is FOR us and will help us with whatever challenges we face. Knowing God will only allow whatever is ultimately for our best, gives us this sense that all is well, even in the midst of hard times. This Joy which finds its source in our inner being, united with the Holy Spirit, gives us the strength to face whatever comes and the ability and insight to do whatever we need to do to overcome the trials.
As the Scriptures teach us, while Israel was having yet another challenging time, Nehemiah taught them to choose Joy. He encouraged them to go and celebrate life, to be a blessing to others, and that this Joy which is grounded in the Lord, would give them strength to be victorious. May we choose to do the same…here is the verse:
“And Nehemiah continued, ‘Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!’” Nehemiah 8:10
