We all know the effects of isolation too well I am sad to say. This past year plus has given us a new understanding of how devastating it can be to not be able to leave our homes and gather with others. Isolation leads towards those “death symptoms” we have been discussing. It moves us towards depression, anxiety, worthlessness, hopelessness, anger, bitterness and so on. But we do not HAVE TO choose this path! We can decide instead to get involved with others, just like we were created to do.
This is a big part of “denying yourself.” Our old, sinful nature wants to do whatever seems easier, more comfortable and more pleasurable. But this path is usually temporary, it never lasts, and we end up more miserable than ever before. We were created to be with others, so deny the lie that is trying to keep you isolated and in your own cocoon. As I have been saying, the truth is the harder path and may seem harder at first, but it is the one that will give us a more fulfilling life.
In spite of all we have endured, there are still plenty of ways to get together with our family and friends. Perhaps we must get creative, and we certainly must be intentional, but we can always find a way to gather. For instance, begin a hobby where you have to be with others. The point is to make a commitment to be involved, don’t make excuses to stay isolated. Just being involved and interacting with others will lift our mental and emotional health.
Today’s tip: Get involved
