The Difference Between Hard & Challenging

Yesterday we talked about picking the harder path, but here’s another lesson that is very important: watch how words effect you. Many of the people I have coached end up saying the same thing, “Diane, this is just too hard!” I absolutely get that, but staying the same, is pure misery! We have to choose that harder path of transformation so that we can get to the point of peace and joy, no matter what is going on in life. And so I always respond the same way, “Just because it is hard, does NOT mean it is impossible!” Change what you are naming the situation and you can change the results of it too.

When we say something is hard, too often our emotions begin to get overwhelmed and we just do not want to do the thing because, well, it’s hard! But what if we chose the word “challenging” to describe that task instead? This would give our soul something to overcome. This should send us to our Lord so we can pray about receiving whatever it is we need to triumph over this trial. Our words can either open us up and help us to come closer to God, so we can do all things through Him because He strengthens us…OR our words can shut us down, leading us to go inward and being self-reliant, which can lead us to lack the strength to meet the challenge.

While we are to choose the harder, more fulfilling path, we also have to watch what we say to ourselves and others about the current circumstances in our lives. Words can help us or hurt us. Remember, every thought we have is a conversation we have with ourselves, so watch your words!

Today’s tip: Watch your words
