Microbiome is what I call “our secret inhabitants.” Secret because 1- most people don’t even know they exist, and 2- because most doctors never even take it into consideration when treating illnesses. The closest we come, and this is sadly still not every clinician, is when we take an antibiotic, you might vaguely hear the advice to use a probiotic along with it, especially if you are a female. But there is soooo much more to these powerful friends within.
So what is our Microbiome? I am going to point you to another article I wrote called “Health Seekers: 10 Things About Our Microbiome” (link below) where you can get more details. For here though, the most fascinating thing is that our Microbiome is actually a whole other bodily system we have, that is not even human! It is made up of trillions, yes trillions with a “T”, of microorganisms that actually help keep us alive. They exert a powerful effect on our physical and mental health and we are only now learning about all their potential impact on our daily lives.
As I always say, it blows my mind that God has created each and everyone of us to be a walking, talking, living, breathing planet on which these microscopic organisms live. I can’t help but think about that Dr Seuss story “Horton Hears a Who”…in the speck of a human body, that we are, lives a whole other world that we could not live without. How fascinating is that?!
