So the problem with all these chemicals we put on our bodies is not only that they absorb through our skin and go into our bloodstream, but they also affect our Microbiome in negative ways. One that is commonly used, especially now, is hand sanitizers. They are created to kill bacteria…which sounds great…but a large part of our healthy Microbiome ARE bacteria! So you can imagine the problem, right? I am not saying we have to stop using them altogether, but we certainly do not have to overuse them either.
Just to get off topic for a second here, please do not allow yourselves to become paranoid about microbes and viruses and such. Any time we allow fear to come into our hearts and start to worry about all these invisible organisms, we actually lower our immune system, which can make it easier to catch what we are afraid of catching! Be wise. Be respectful. But please oh please, do not live in fear! This shows a lack of Faith in our Loving God…ok, I could go on and on here, but I will get back on track.
Washing our hands when we can, with regular, not antibacterial soap but regular soap, in water does an excellent job at killing off any harmful potential invaders. A nice tip about how long to wash them is to say the Lord’s Prayer once through while washing. I put a link below of a good article from the CDC about this topic if you want to check it out.
I am trying to come up with different ways to carry soap and water around with me to lessen the need to use hand sanitizers. One thing I found is this paper soap item which can be easily carried and which I can use with bottled water to clean on the go. I will try it out…we will see how well it keeps up. So whether it is this or even just keeping a bar of soap in a sock in my car, my point is, be creative because…say it with me…all the changes we make to lessen our exposure to chemicals are well worth it!
