Mrs Meyer continues giving us the “Anatomy of Habits,” by explaining that every habit is formed through repetition. When we do something long enough, whether good or bad, it becomes part of our nature, who we are, so then we do the same routine without even thinking about it. We act in that same pattern without paying attention to what we are doing, yet she also says that, if we stop doing it, we will miss it. Think about someone who is attempting to quit smoking here. Many times, because they had formed the habit, they would pull out a cigarette after dinner, for instance, so when they don’t, they can sense something is missing here! All this to say that it is going to take time to break that habit, but it is much simpler and quicker if we form another, better habit instead. As I always say, it did not take you one day to form that habit, so it is not going to take you one day to change it either. Forming new, healthier habits takes time, energy and focus, and let’s not forget the loving power of God!
Let me ask a question, because here’s another trick from the enemy that we must be aware of so we will not fall into his trap: when is the best time to begin creating the good habit? The answer of course is, NOW! Mrs Meyer encourages us to not wait. We have to start somewhere so why not now? The quicker we get started, the quicker we will find relief. First, we need to be honest that we have a habit that must change. Then we need to confront it and get on the other side of it, so begin today because bad habits are your enemy. They keep us from being the best person we can be, she says. She prompts us to begin treating those bad habits like a thief trying to steal what Jesus purchased for us, which is the Abundant Life. This reality will, hopefully, cause us to be more enthusiastic about leaving these bad habits behind us, as we form those good ones to replace them.
