Our Vital Need For Water

We are on to the next chapter titled, “He Leads Me Beside Quiet Waters.” First, Mr Keller wants us to understand the vital importance of water for the sheep…and for you and me too. “Water determines the vitality, strength, and vigor of the sheep and is essential to its health and general well-being.” (p58) Like us, if the sheep become dehydrated, they become restless and go out in search of any water to drink. If they cannot find a clear and clean supply, they will drink from whatever dirty source they can quickly get access to. Sad thing is they end up picking up all sorts of parasites and other germs that cause disease from those polluted pot holes. Does this sound like us humans?

We all have an innate thirst for God. We long to find meaning. We desire to have significance. And we really want to be righteous. These can only find their fulfillment in Christ. Knowing God and becoming more and more like Him is the only way to satisfy this real thirst in our hearts. If we do not seek Him, we will look to lesser worldly ways to find fulfillment for these needs. Jesus is the Living Water that our souls truly thirst for, and Scripture points, proclaims and positions us to find Him. We need both God’s written Word and Incarnate Word to truly be satiated. If we do not know this or do not know where to seek Him, we will look to lesser, polluted worldly sources to fill this need. These muddied waters will only cause further problems in our lives, many leading to internal dis-ease, like depression, anxiety, or various addictions and vices. Clean, healthy water is a vital requirement for our physical bodies, and also for our souls and spirit too. And only Jesus, our Good Shepherd, can lead us to these quiet waters.
