I am able to glean a lot from this chapter because I tend to have the personality trait of a perfectionist. Anyone else out there have that too? If anything is off kilter just a little bit, it bugs me to no end. Or at least it used to, before I became anointed and really started to grow. Even now, the more I realize how powerful the Holy Spirit’s Presence is within me, the more I am able to let things go and choose to be content even when things are far from perfect. This is the power of being anointed. We can still be content even as we are praying for God to answer our prayers. And this is one of the things that bugs our enemy! In the end, it is he who is trying to steal our peace, kill our joy and destroy our witness to the world of who God is, and what He can do in, and with, the broken human.
God can heal us and it is this anointing that paves the way. If we are learning to be immune to the “bugs” of life that the enemy throws our way, then we have the room and energy for the healing. See? The irritations in life are meant to distract us from that which is most important, being with our God. It is only when we are truly with Him, either in His Word, in prayer or even in fellowship with others talking about our lives through the viewpoint of God, that we are able to heal from whatever is causing a sickness in our hearts. This could be anything from a physical disease, a relational strife, a financial burden, or an occupational challenge. Every area of life can be made more soothing when we allow God to administer His oil of anointing over our minds, because the way we view what is happening changes everything, even if the situation remains.
How does God do this? Listen to Mr Keller’s words, “It is this daily anointing of God’s gracious Spirit upon my mind which produces in my life such personality traits as joy, contentment, love, patience, gentleness, and peace. What a contrast this is to the tempers, frustration, and irritableness which mar the daily conduct of so many of God’s children.” (p141-142) In other words, the more time we spend with God, the more we will think, and so, act like Him. This is the goal for the Christian, to be more Christ-like, and this comes as we become more and more aware of this wonderful anointing of the Holy Spirit.
