Dr Tozer’s words in this book begin with a Preface in which he talks about how believers should thirst for God and be satisfied with nothing less. We should never fall for anything this world may try to offer in God’s place, for nothing else will bring us true contentment. He says as believers begin to search for a deeper sense of God’s Love, it can lead to “…a recapture of that radiant wonder which should accompany faith in Christ, that wonder which has all but fled the Church of God in our day.” (p7)
It is strangely comforting to hear this from Dr Tozer as it looks like the Church is in the same exact state in our current culture as well. It seems like going to church is just one more activity in a long list of things that we feel obligated to do…this should not be, my Friends. Church is not a place we go to. The Church is you and me, the people that join together to worship and learn more deeply about the Love and Grace of God towards us underserving humans.
We are the Church and so we should BE the Church, reflecting Jesus everywhere we go. All those other activities should be opportunities to draw others into the Christ that we love, and seek, and long to imitate. Being a Christian, a Christ believer and follower, should be our motivation behind everything we think, say and do. Let’s join Dr Tozer and seek the fulfilling life that can only be found as we pursue God with at least a fraction of the intensity with which He pursues us.
