Through Dr Tozer and this powerful first chapter, I have been encouraging us to pursue God and experience every Grace He so generously offers us. Yet our current Church, like the author’s, might be settling for something so much less. Dr Tozer makes this sad observation, “How tragic that we in this dark day have had our seeking done for us by our teachers.” (p16) This is not the personal and intimate relationship God desires to have with each of His children. He goes on to lament about God’s own heart as he says, “[God] waits to be wanted. Too bad that with many of us He waits so long, so very long, in vain.” (p17) If this is you, won’t you make the commitment to follow hard after God today? Start with committing to read the Bible, with God guiding the way. If you are already a seeker, then won’t you encourage others to follow hard after God too? Remember, we receive Grace that we may give it away to those around us, so don’t be shy about talking to others about our Jesus. This time of year it is especially simple to do so. We only need to simply point to the Babe in the Manger.
Dr Tozer joyfully says that not every church-goer is satisfied with a shallow understanding about God. He states, “They want to taste, to touch with their hearts, to see with their inner eyes the wonder that is God.” (p17) The author rightly says to know God is the most important thing we can do in life. It fills us with everything else we could ever want or need. He goes on to say, “When the Lord divided Canaan among the tribes of Israel, Levi received no share of the land. God said to him simply, ‘I am thy part and thine inheritance,’ and by those words made him richer than all his brethren, richer than all the kings and rajas who have ever lived in the world.” (p19) Do we believe this? If we have God, increasingly knowing Him and living by and for Him, then we have everything we ever wanted. Let’s meditate on this truth today!
