When it comes to single adults and changing your habits towards money, Mr Ramsey notes that you have a much bigger challenge than married couples who have a built-in accountability partner. He says your biggest obstacle is “time poverty” and fatigue, because you may have to play double duty in your household, most especially if you are a single parent, which often leads to your schedule being maxed out. The stress and exhaustion can lead to greater expenses, like ordering out because you are just too frazzled to cook a meal after a long day of work and/or child rearing. He warns that another problem can be impulse buying. He says, “With no one at home to worry about, single adults can rationalize almost any expense, big or small!” (p36) For so very many reasons, Singles need to have someone you can trust to keep you committed to getting financially healthy, or you can self-sabotage your own plan.
Again, this is a trustworthy friend, or a coach or mentor like me, who will be completely honest with you so that you can have success. This is NOT someone who will go shopping with you. This is NOT someone who will police you and make you feel like a child. But someone who will love you enough to help you make the godly decisions that will lead to triumph. So create that monthly budget plan, but also have an accountability partner who you can bounce things off of, like your budget and miscellaneous purchases. You are not alone, so do not try to go it alone!
