Today let’s start delving into the 14 good habits Mrs Meyer talks about in this powerful book. I will keep a running list of them in the description below, as we discuss each one.
The first one is what I talk about ALL…THE…TIME. What is it? She reverentially calls it “The God Habit.” This is the first habit we should create because, this one alone, will eliminate many of our bad habits. She rightly says that, “Spending time with God and being in the Word can become a habit.” And for most people, we have to work at making it our daily habit. I love reading God’s Word, in case you haven’t figured that out yet, but sadly, there are times when I neglect my time in Scripture to my own detriment. I can almost immediately sense “death come upon me,” as I term it. I begin to think negative thoughts. I begin to feel hopeless again. I begin to eat things that are not healthy, speak in ways that are not loving, and to be completely honest, I begin to linger in bed, pulling the covers over my head, and not wanting to deal with life either.
What I have found is, the more mature we get in Christ, the more we must be with Him, in both prayer and His Word. This is true because, the more spiritually grown we are, the more dependent we are on the leading of the Holy Spirit, so the quicker we will sense the loss of His Abundant Life when we turn away from Him. I seriously cannot go more than two or three days without spending time with God, before old Jezebel comes rising up from the grave to take over me once again. Please, O please do not dismiss this best good habit because, it is the only way to have this New Life in abundance. When difficulties come, because they will, we know where to go because it is our habit to connect with God. I mean if Jesus made it a habit to spend time with the Father, how much more do we need to form this habit, right? (see Lk 22:39)
Mrs Meyer says that, “All the Saints of the Bible had this God habit.” And this is not just going to church or a weekly Bible study either! Those are all just pieces, she says, then we must bring them all to God so He can put them together, and make them work in our lives. If you have never done so, she suggests just start spending five minutes per day in His Word, then add as you make it a habit. She says, take it in little bites because they add up…don’t ever not do anything because you think you can’t do something great. Take that first step…that’s when God’s Grace meets you so you can do what you need to do.
