Hear this great verse again.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Pr 22:6 ESV
This verse is not only for parents who are trying to teach their own children. Oh no! It is for each one of us that desires more of the Abundant Life Jesus died to give us. He died so we can say NO to our old, selfish way, and say YES to following His Way. But I remind us again, His self-LESS way, does NOT come naturally to us, so we have to be more and more aware of our thoughts, words and deeds if we really want more of this New Life. Because as we are more and more aware of these, we will be more and more able to know when we are still with God, submitted to Him, or when we have turned away and are following our old Self again.
Training takes time, effort and lots and lots of patience. We must be merciful with others, and this includes ourselves. We must leave learn to leave perfectionism behind and seek Sanctification instead. The truth is you and I are not going to get it all right, all the time…but by God’s Grace, as we work with Him to be trained up in His Way, we can get it right more often than not. Growth. This is where our focus should be because Sanctification is a process. I want to act more like Jesus today than I did yesterday, but I hope to act more like Him tomorrow than I am today. A process…but if we are not aware of this process, if we are not working with God in this process, if we are not allowing Him to train us up…will anything change?
