Earned Wages VS Free Gift

We all love it when we get free stuff, right? Well what can be better than the free gift of Eternal Life? Here’s our verse for the week, from the amazing Book of Romans, chapter 6 verse 23:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Ro 6:23 ESV

First, let’s talk about the difference between earning something vs simply receiving a free gift. When we earn something, we have to work for it, right? Like in our jobs, we work the hours we are assigned and then at the end of the week, we expect to get a paycheck because we put in the time and deserve it. That’s justice, the right thing to do.

A free gift, on the other hand, is not something we have worked towards. A free gift is given to us out of the generosity of the giver of the gift, right? For instance, if I was having a birthday party and someone brought me a gift, they wouldn’t expect me to serve them for the next couple of hours in order for them to give me that gift! That would not be a gift then. No, because that person loves me and wants to honor me, they give me this gift and it is free of charge. I do not have to pay them back in any way. I know this sounds really simple, yet do we get this mixed up all the time when it comes to our Salvation? Let’s talk it out this week…
