Gifts That Give

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” That’s from a lovely poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and it speaks to the fact that there really are countless ways we can express our love to the one we are loving. And when it comes to gift giving, the only limits are your imagination. For instance, if your spouse, friend etc, is a Browning fan, how about printing the above poem, I mentioned, on a beautiful frame and surprising them with it?

My big takeaway from this particular love language is the gift must be something that means a lot to the other person. Of course, this is nowhere more vital than in a marriage. For instance, my husband knows not to buy me flowers. While I think they are beautiful, it kind of makes me sad to watch them die right in front of me….and to be honest, they make a mess that I would rather not have to clean. I would much rather him take me to a garden somewhere to see them growing in their natural habitat. Again, this is just me and it speaks more about Quality Time than Receiving Gifts, but my point? Take the time to know the person’s interest, likes and dislikes, then gift them something that will have significance to them. And hopefully, if this is your language, the one giving the gifts will do the same thing for you, keeping your preferences in mind too.
