Goodness & Mercy

There are so many lessons and good insight into our Christian life from that last chapter that I can spend the rest of this month talking about it, so I really do hope you will invest in this great book. But today let’s get to the next chapter called “Surely goodness and love will follow me…” This statement from David is one of confidence in God and His plan for David’s life. He is saying that, no matter what happens, I know that God’s goodness and mercy will be in the midst of the events, so I can remain at rest, content even in hardship. This is a most wonderful place to be, my Friends. To be steady, whether good things happen or bad, is precious. And here’s the truth, even the situations we perceive as headaches or heartaches, God intends them for our good. So even those difficulties should be viewed in the light of God’s Love.

Our problem is we take each individual event and label them as good or bad, instead of being patient and allowing God to work them all together for good. I know I struggle with this especially when things do not work out the way I thought they should. But this is all a part of growing in Christ. We learn to leave behind what we think, and begin to see things as God sees them. Then, like David, even if we are in a season of difficult trials, we can lift our eyes to God, trusting Him to weave it all for our benefit. In the meantime, we do that which we know we ought to do as a sign of our Faith and Gratitude towards our loving God. And we choose to enjoy each and every day as God does what only God can do. When I forget this truth, the Holy Spirit brings up a very helpful reminder:  Ps 118:24 “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” My perspective changes and so does my mood as contentment comes rushing back into my life. And all this because I do know deep in my heart that for the rest of my days here and beyond, surely God’s goodness and mercy will follow me!
