The last reason why we should become a Super Saver is to build wealth. We will talk about this more at the end of this month. But we must understand that it is both important and good for us Christians to be out of debt and have financial freedom, so we can actually do the work of God in this broken world. Again, money is amoral. What we do with it makes all the difference.
If you are a nerd like me and you love the math, Mr Ramsey shows us how vital it is to start saving as early as we can, because compound interest is real, and it is a powerful thing. (see especially pages 17-20) He rightly says, “The trick is, though, that you have to start right now! No matter how young or how old you are, all the time you have is all the time you have. You have to start where you are.” (p20) Don’t regret wasted time, but don’t waste anymore time. Start saving now.
The key to all this, though, is discipline. Yeah, I said it! Too often we still think that is a dirty word, but it is one of the most helpful and health-full words we can learn to live by. We are Christians, after all. And as I have said a million times, a Christian is someone who believes AND follows Christ. You and me cannot follow that High Standard of being without discipline. We must increasingly be aware of, and in control of, our own thoughts, emotions, desires and actions. And without godly discipline, good luck! The wonderful thing is that we are never alone. All we really have to do is lean on the Holy Spirit that lives within our regenerated hearts, and He will help us grow into the lovely Fruit of the Spirit and those virtues it brings, like self-control. And we get to experience the amazing joy of being set free in every area of our lives, including our finances. That sounds like an excellent return on our investment!
Mr Ramseys shares that, “Too many people skip the discipline and try to go straight to the enjoyment…. Wealth building is a marathon, not a sprint. There really aren’t any shortcuts. That’s why most people don’t do it; if building wealth were easy, everyone would be rich!” (p17) Connect with God. Then trust Him to help you discipline yourself and become free.
