Mr Lucado says that the root for the word “glory” in Hebrew means “heavy, weighty, or importance.” “When you think ‘God’s Glory,’ think ‘preeminence.’ And, when you think ‘preeminence,’ think ‘priority.’ For God’s glory is God’s priority.” (p28) The title to this particular chapter is “Divine Self-promotion.” But with humans who think life is all about “me,” this might seem completely strange. Yet life is all about God’s Glory. You and I were created for God’s Glory. There should be nothing more important to His children than God’s Glory. Do we understand why this is so?
Mr Lucado gives us another powerful example of a pilot of a lifeboat navigating through a thick fog, seeking those he can rescue. (story on p30) When a ship sinks and our lives are on the verge of ending, we do not want this pilot to be shy about his presence, whispering quietly that he is there, do we? This author says, “By no means! You need volume! Amp it up, buddy! In biblical jargon, you want him to show his glory.” (p30) My Friends, we are drowning out here in this world. And God is the only one Who can save us. If life was not all about God’s Glory, how would we know He is real and really loves us? How would we know He can, and desires to save us? How would we find Him and be saved if the entire point to this life was not Him? If life is all about “me,” then we are all done for.
He says, “Look around. People thrash about in seas of guilt, anger, despair. Life isn’t working. We are going down fast. But God can rescue us. And only one message matters. His! We need to see God’s glory.” (pp30-31) And it is certainly not for His own sake that God makes life all about Himself. It is for our sakes. And once He does rescue us, we must join God in promoting Him to those around us. Again think of that lifeboat. Once we are in the boat safe and sound, how dare we not shout out His Presence to others who are still drowning! I challenge us today to go reflect God’s Glory on someone, pointing them to His Lifeboat, then leave me a message about your experience.
