In Whose House?

To live in the house of the Lord means to be utterly content with belonging to God. To receiving His Love and Grace and Mercy and Goodness and so on, so much so that we are truly joyful to be His and not ashamed to admit it. Mr Keller says, “We should delight to describe, in detail, the hard experiences through which He has brought us. And we should be eager and quick to tell of our confidence in Christ. We should be bold to state fearlessly that we are so glad we are His. By the contentment and serenity of our lives we should show what a distinct advantage it is to be a member of His ‘household,’ of His flock.” (p167) Talking about Christ and all He has, and continues to do, in our lives should not be something we do only with other Christians. It should not be an afterthought when talking to others either. This should overflow from our contented hearts to everyone we meet. And this can be a simple thing. For instance, instead of being upset that the cashier line is taking longer than you would like, a simple sincere “Thank you for your service and God bless you,” can go a long way to help someone who might be having a tough day at work know that God can make a difference. To be a member of the Flock of our Good Shepherd means we are content and display this contentment through all our thoughts, words and deeds…and hopefully others will want what we have already been given.

The story of the sheep owned by a heartless herdsman is so sad, but so eye opening. (see pp168-169) Mr Keller states, “What a picture of Satan who holds ownership over so many.” (p169) We must stop and ask ourselves, who am I allowing to own me? Who is influencing my thoughts? Who is affecting my emotions? Who is inspiring my decisions? Who is directing my actions? Because the results in our lives will be based on who is our shepherd. The author then explains how he would have taken care of those sickly sheep, if he had become their owner. (see last paragraph of p169) It is a process, but there is only one way in which one can begin this transformation into health and contentment and the Abundant Life. We must surrender to the Good Shepherd and become His. Let’s finish up this awesome book tomorrow…
