Mary the Mother of God is too often misunderstood. The Bible says she is the most blessed of all women and how can we not agree? (Lk 1:42) It was amazing for me to sense my own children growing in my womb, can you imagine having God Incarnate within you! To be given the mission to bring the Savior of the world, into this fallen world? What a glorious mission! We should honor her…but never, ever should we worship her! This wonderful Mother needed the Savior to save her just as much as any of us do. She was not sinless, yet God counted her as righteous.
Mary the Mother of God is blessed most definitely, and Jesus, with His final breaths made sure she was taken care of, because of His deep love for her. Wanting her to stay safely within the confines of the early church, Jesus gives His Mother to John the Apostle. Listen:
“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’” Jn 19:26 NIV
The disciple whom Jesus loved. Here is another misunderstanding. John is in no way saying he was more loved than the rest. The reason he gives himself this title is because he is in awe that Jesus would love him. Are we?
You and I know the things we have done wrong, the wicked thoughts we have entertained, the selfish ambitions we have pursued, the many times we have denied Jesus as our Lord. We know how vile we can get…and Jesus knows all this too, my Friends! And yet He loves us still! No guilt here, but we should be in awe at His Love for us. Diane, (fill in your own name) the Child Jesus loves! We should never lose the joy in knowing the King of kings surrendered His Life for us because He loves us…and the way we begin to return this love is by surrendering our own lives to Him daily too.
