Who is lord and who is steward? This may seem like an antiquated way of understanding life, but in God’s economy, it still exists. God is the only Lord, Who generously gives us much to use, to enjoy and to share. It’s interesting to me how we parents are always trying to teach our kids to share, but do we learn this same lesson for ourselves? None of it is ours anyway, even though, by God’s Grace, we GET TO hold on to it for a while. But what we are doing with all our resources is what makes the difference between being a hoarder who only serves MMI, or being a blessing who loves God by loving others.
A steward manages the assets for the lord of the land. We don’t own them irrevocably. This means we are learning how to be good and faithful servants. This also means if God gave it to us, God can take it away. Nowhere in the Bible is this lesson learned more clearly than in the Book of Job. And he was righteous in God’s eyes. The issue is always a matter of our heart. Will we trust God even if He were to take away everything we thought was ours? Job obviously passed the test and was rewarded double for the trouble. And why did he pass? Because he did with “his” possessions what we all should do. He helped the poor, was generous with his friends and was responsible with God’s gifts. Job loved too serve others with the blessings God gave him. And when it was all taken, he still trusted God. Are we passing these financial tests?
