To love and be loved. This is the whole point to life. Remember, the first “not good” in the Bible was that it is not good for man to be alone. (Gen 2:18) Even though Adam had God, he needed someone else, someone more like himself, in order to GIVE all this love he was receiving from God. And of course he could, and I’m sure he did, return this love to God, yet the best way to love God is to love one another. Again, this requires that we have “another” in our life. It requires that we are not alone.
Sometimes I do think life would be so much more simple if it was just Jesus and me, but then I sense my own need to be with other children of God. I need others to encourage, like God encourages me. I need others to help, the way God helps me. And the truth is I also need others who struggle just like I do. I need to know that I am not alone in my own immature nature. I need to know that there are other humans “out there” who wrestle the way I do, as I am being transformed into God’s original design to be more like His Image. I need to know I am not alone in this process. Thus this incredible blessing from God: other humans so I know I am not alone.
Thankfully, God knows our needs before we know we have a need, and so He has graciously given us the blessing of other human beings. As we grasp this fact, that we are each a gift from God to one another, hopefully, our lives and relationships, will become more of the blessing they should be, instead of the curse we sometimes make them out to be. More on that tomorrow…
