“For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” Jas 2:26 ESV
Doing good works is anything we say and do that reflects our Good, Good Father. For instance, when we help someone get their groceries to their car. When we forgive someone who has hurt us deeply. When we encourage someone who is going through a difficult time. And even, when we rebuke someone who is going down a dangerous path. All these are reflecting what God does for everyone, whether they acknowledge Him or not. As our Holy Father, He does not need our permission to do good works in anyone’s life. First He is our Father. Second He is a loving and gracious God Who only, and always, wants what is best for us.
Just like I do not need my son’s permission to help him in any way, so too our Father is going to do, or allow, whatever He must because He so loves the world. And for those of us who believe and are in Christ, God will surely watch over us in ways that we will be able to experience. There will be evidence of God’s Love in our lives. This is what James is talking about here. If we love, like God loves, then we are going to do good works that display the evidence that we are saved by Faith. Faith should automatically translate into good works.
