With Book One, the authors introduced us to some of the disciples of Jesus in the hopes that, as we got to know them, we could get to know Jesus better too. We could begin to understand how He deals with each and every human with such loving compassion. The authors add, “And, of course, it’s tremendous help knowing they were all such a mess – through them we can see more clearly the only Way to be whole.” (p9) With Book Two, the authors say they want us to reeeeaaallly get a picture of what it means to follow Jesus. They note, “Not just showing up periodically, hoping to get a meal or a healing, but going all in and following Him wherever He may lead…like, say, to a cross.” (p10)
In season two of The Chosen, Jesus begins His ministry by traveling to surrounding areas with His disciples to “spread the news” about the kingdom of God. His new students must learn what it means to follow Jesus through the mundane daily activities, as well as some incredibly special moments. Have you ever thought about that, the mundane activities? I’m so used to all the highlights in the Bible that I almost forget they had to do such things as move their camp around which meant putting up and tearing down their tents. Foraging for food and wood so they could be fed and warm. Trying to control crowds that wanted to see Jesus. This show gives us a different perspective of what following Jesus must have been like in their every day to day life. It is so interesting to see what it might have entailed.
What we as His followers can learn from this, of course, is that following Jesus does not mean every day of our lives is going to involve a super miraculous experience. Following Jesus might simply mean making sure our home is clean, food is available for our family, or learning to control our finances. These are areas that don’t seem very glamorous, yet if we are His followers, then we will desire to do even the mundane to our greatest ability. It is certainly a growing process because we tend to try and separate the holy from the secular. But if we are truly His, then everything is holy to us. And if everything is holy, then we must do everything the way Jesus did, with excellence.
