The next chapter of our book is also one of my most passionate topics: Eternal security. Mr Lucado begins with a humorous scenario of the difference between passengers who have confirmed tickets for an airplane ride vs those who are on standby. He laments, “How can you rest if you aren’t assured passage on the final flight home?” But then he sadly continues, “Many people don’t. Many Christians don’t. They live with a deep-seated anxiety about eternity. They think they are saved, hope they are saved, but still they doubt, wondering, Am I really saved?… When we forget our vow to God, does God forget us? Does God place us on a standby list?” (p132) It simply makes me so sad when sincerely surrendered children of God still are not completely sure of their final destiny. Can you imagine how much this mistrust breaks God’s heart?
Let’s put this to rest, once and for all…and if you know someone who is born again, but not secure in their eternity, please use these three questions to bring them relief too. So here they are: 1- are we saved by our works or by God’s Grace? (see Eph 2:8) 2- Is God Faithful even when we are not? (see Dt 7:9) 3- Does God give us a gift then take it away? (see Ro 11:29) Remember Salvation is a free gift. Even that last verse should be enough to give us eternal security in Christ. Let me share its Amplified version: “For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.]” (Ro 11:29 AMPC) Irrevocable! This is just one of the reasons why becoming born again is such a precious gift.
How sad to live this life and not have eternal security if you are His, when God’s Word is so very clear about it. And how insulting to our Holy Father as well. Can you imagine a human adopting a child, but then changing their minds and kicking that child out of their household? Well, as we have been saying, God adopts us into His Forever Family. If it is unthinkable for a human to go back on his word, why would we ever expect God to do such an awful thing? God’s gift of Grace, once genuinely received, will never, ever be taken away from us. My Friends, once we are His, we are His forever. So the real question is: are you His?
