The next section of Psalm 23 turns from talking to others about how awesome our Good Shepherd is, to directly talking to Jesus. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”
First, I heard a different author say that we only walk through the valley of the “shadow” of death. It is not full-on death or who could survive? It is but a shadow, and God is with us every step of the way. Let this give us relief and a heart full of gratitude towards God.
Second, this author mentions, and God has shown me many times, we are to walk “through” this valley, not stop and sit in its shadows! This means when life gets rough, because it will, we are to remember God is with us, to turn to our Good Shepherd, and He will get us through it all, to the other side where we can be set free.
Lastly, Mr Keller tells us that the only way to the top of the mountain is through these valleys. Speaking from his experience as a sheepman, he says, “And the best route to the top is always along these valleys.” (p100) He continues, “Not only is this the way of the gentlest grades, but also it is the well-watered route.” (p102) It is when we are experiencing these valleys that God is so very present to us. When all is well, we sadly, almost forget He is with us. But when everything is dark and devastating and desperate? Oh yeah we seek God! The Bible teaches us when we draw near to God, we will see that He is near to us. He will refresh us right there in the midst of the hardships of the valley. And it is all possible just because He is so very tangibly with us in the valley of the shadow of death.
