The whole point to allowing these increasing degrees of discipline in our lives is so that God may reveal a truth about our nature to us. We have all fallen short of the glory of God, which means we all need to let go of old sinful habits that do not display God’s Holiness. (see Ro 3:23) Whether we may be experiencing rebuke, chastisement or even scourging, God’s Hope is to bring us to the point of repentance. To repent does not mean we feel bad about our sin. It means we clearly understand the terrible damage that sin brings and we want nothing to do with it. We turn away from that sin and turn to God, Who is the only one Who can help us be free from it. To repent means to change our belief, thoughts, feelings, desires and behavior toward that sin. It encompasses all of who we are as God works to rid our lives of that immorality.
And why wouldn’t we want to repent? Sin imprisons us, yet our old ways die hard. Perhaps we are ignorant and do not acknowledge that what we are doing is sin. Maybe we are indulgent and stubbornly just want what we want. Then we might be irresponsible where we play the blame game and claim “it” is not our fault. Lastly, we could be irrational where we simply make up all sorts of excuses as to why we continue in the sin. Let’s talk more about the tomorrow…
