Our Microbiome & Antibiotics

Again check out my disclaimer below…

Today let’s talk about Microbiome and antibiotics. I hope we would all agree that antibiotics have been a game changer. Before 1928 when Dr Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, many people died from what are now very curable infections. Penicillin is a naturally occurring strain of bacteria by the way…see God made vs man made…that will fight against infections from other bacteria strains. I will link I really good article about this discovery below if, like me, you are interested in the particulars. My point is that man discovered this already existing miracle and it has changed many lives. I hesitate to say that antibiotics “save” lives, because only Jesus could do that, but they have certainly extended lives, by God’s Grace.

The issue, of course, is that all antibiotics, kill bacteria…and what is our Microbiome largely made of? Bacteria…so you can see the problem, right? The first issue is when doctors over prescribe antibiotics, instead of seeking first lifestyle changes. The unnecessary and overuse of these helpful class of meds is devastating to our Microbiome. Again, this is the “pop a pill” mentality, when many times something less invasive can be done.

Secondly, when patients do not take their antibiotics correctly, this leads to all sorts of mutations which then cause these antibiotics to not even work anymore, leading to the manufacturing of stronger and stronger antibiotics…again think man made versus God created. I have said several times that bacteria are very quick to adapt and change to their environment, right? Well this includes when antibiotics are introduced into our inner environment. When you get a prescription for antibiotics, please… seriously please… finish the entire RX. Praise God if you start feeling better a day or two into the RX regimen, but just because you feel better, does not mean you have gotten rid of the illness-causing bacteria! Finish the entire dose or the quickly changing and adapting bacteria will mutate so that the antibiotic no longer kills them.

So:

#1 make sure it is a bacterial infection that no other lifestyle change, like taking probiotics for instance, will help

#2 finish the whole bottle if you get them

And here’s a bonus

#3 take probiotics if you take antibiotics

DISCLAIMER:

I remind you all that I am NOT a doctor…but I am a pharmacist and so, medicines are kind of my forte. But I am not here to diagnose anything, and I am certainly not here to tell you to stop taking your prescriptions…actually the total opposite, hear me: DO NOT STOP your medications without consulting your doctor…but if your doctor is not interested in helping you get off your medications, then perhaps it is time to find another doctor.
