What’s the Difference?

So there is a huge difference between the purpose of our occupation versus our vocation. Obviously, our occupation is our jobs where we work to earn a living in order to be able to live on this earth. While money is by far NOT the most important issue we humans face, it is a necessary part of living here. We need money in order to purchase food, to have a roof over our heads, to buy clothing, to maintain our physical health through various ways, and also to add to our enjoyment to our lives. Who doesn’t enjoy taking a getaway with the family now and again, right? So our careers focus on making an income so that we can have, enjoy and share all these things.

A vocation, on the other hand, does not focus on money, but instead, it centers on serving others. Usually this involves a deep passion we have, like for me, I love to read, study and write, especially about the Bible, and I also love teaching others to be able to have more and more of the Abundant Life God desires for us. If you had asked me before I became born-again that this is what I would be doing the rest of my days here, I would have thought you were nuts! And yet, God has given me this gift, and continues to help me develop it. This is another big difference between occupation and vocation…more tomorrow.
