Delaying Gratification

“I want it now!” This seems to be the mentality with our current culture, doesn’t it? We do not want to wait for anything, but look for that immediate satisfaction instead. But we can learn a whole lot from previous generations. If they really wanted a certain item, they actually used to save up enough money to be able to buy it outright. This is called delayed gratification, and it can reveal the level of our spiritual maturity.

The more we imitate the older, wiser ways of saving for things we want, instead of running for any credit cards, the more mature we are. Waiting is good for us. Could this be why the Bible talks about “waiting on God” all the time? After all, aren’t we just spoiled, selfish children if we demand to get what we want, when we want it? There is goodness in waiting…our Faith increases as we wait. It refocuses us from the creation back to the Creator. Our lives become less about stuff and more about basking in the love of God, then loving others too.

It is ok to wait. On purpose, let’s try it this week. When there is something we really want, let’s wait…maybe we will discover that we can actually live without it…and that will keep us from any impulse buying, which will keep us out of debt!
