Our Microbiome and PPI’s Part 2

Again check out my disclaimer below…

Second: Taking PPI’s for long term can reduce the absorption of important vitamins and minerals like B12, Calcium, Iron and Magnesium. They can cause your liver enzymes to skyrocket, indicating trouble with your liver function. And they can allow pathogenic bacteria to invade and grow in our bodies by altering the pH in our stomach. Since this is our first line of defense against permitting these harmful bacteria to invade and grow in us, lowering the pH level in our stomachs gives these harmful bacteria the opportunity to survive, grow and mess up the rest of our Microbiome. So we are not getting the nutrients our Microbiome and bodies need, but we are also messing up our livers, as well as making it easier for bad bacteria to take over.

Third: once you have been on PPI’s for a while, it is very difficult to get off of these meds. Most people will experience what I call acid rebound, where your body is no longer used to all that acid, so when you stop the meds, the acid increases to normal levels. Especially if the problem has not been fixed, that acid will find its way up to our esophagus, where it doesn’t belong, and potentially cause us more harm…so by the way, NEVER just stop these meds! You have to wean off of them, and the longer you have been on them, the longer you might have to take to wean off. But with the guidance from a doctor with experience in this area, it is more than possible.

I speak from personal experience here, that is why I am so passionate about this. I had been trying everything I could to get healthier and I was not yet reaching my goals. In addition, for months, I experienced horrible fatigue and weakness, when God prompted my heart to do research about the PPI I had been on for over 2 years. The first thing that tipped me off that these PPI’s were causing me more harm than good was the literature about the elevated liver enzymes, which I had, and malabsorption of those vitamins and minerals that help ward off fatigue and weakness!

Sadly, according to one doctor, even after I lost weight and did not feel like I needed these PPI’s anymore, she said I should just stay on them anyway for the rest of my life! Yikes…are you getting more deeply why I am urging us all to GET INFORMED?! Doctors are humans who make mistakes! We will wrap it up tomorrow…

DISCLAIMER:

I remind you all that I am NOT a doctor…but I am a pharmacist and so, medicines are kind of my forte. But I am not here to diagnose anything, and I am certainly not here to tell you to stop taking your prescriptions…actually the total opposite, hear me: DO NOT STOP your medications without consulting your doctor…but if your doctor is not interested in helping you get off your medications, then perhaps it is time to find another doctor.
