The second source of water for the sheep Mr Keller talks about are the deep wells, the shepherd draws water from for his sheep. He says, these may seem “dark, deep, dangerous, and somewhat disagreeable.” (p65) While the author does not say this, I see these deep wells as past events that may have left their mark on our hearts. Sitting with God and allowing Him to heal us, uprooting any false notions or deep hurts, may at first seem like something we do not want to enter into. Yet if we trust God, if we choose to work with Him, if we let it go into His hands, trusting Him to work it all together for our good, we will be freed from those things that occupy the place of God in our hearts. The less junk we hold inside, the more room for the glory of God we have inside, and the more fulfilling our lives will become. Do not be afraid to sit with God in the deep, dark wells of your life. It is much more dangerous to allow these past lies and pains to stay inside of you. Let Him free you so that you may have a deeper source of the wells of His Living Water to draw from to satisfy your soul.
Lastly, we have the springs and streams. Here Mr Keller mentions those sheep who the shepherd is leading to the fresh, clean water, but they stop along the way and drink out of the inferior pools of mudded water instead. He talks about how too many people prefer the superficial things of this world than to seek the flowing streams of God’s “overcoming life.” (p67) They seek everything from knowledge and careers, to entertainment and sports, through illicit drugs and perverse sexual activities. This world, and the devil behind it, will supply an endless source of muddied waters if we do not allow the Lord to lead us to the clean, clear and healthy waters that can only be found in Him. Mr Keller quotes the Prophet Jeremiah who speaks on behalf of God saying, “My people…have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jer 2:13) When we seek anything other than God, outside of His Holy Will, we become broken cisterns that cannot hold on to anything satisfying. Yet God offers us the only Source that we need. Let’s choose to run to Him with every thought, word and deed so our thirst may be truly quenched.
