“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen 1:1) It is important to note how orderly and purposeful God was as He created all we see on this planet. First He provided for us to be able to actually see by separating light from darkness. Then He created our atmosphere by separating the waters from above, think clouds, from the water below, like oceans. Next God moved the waters on earth to reveal land, which he then filled with trees and plants that would be self-sustaining. That is they would have seeds through which other like trees and plants would grow. Then God, filled the sky and sea with birds and fish of all kinds. On the sixth day, God created the animals that roam on the land: livestock that could be domesticated, crawling creatures and wild animals.
Lastly, God paused a moment. It is here where we see the Triune God consulting Himself about the Crown of His Creation, mankind. God says, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,” and let them rule over this world. (my condensed version of Gen 1:26) Please don’t miss that we hear God use the terms “us” and “our.” He was not speaking to angels. He was certainly not asking humans for any input. No, God the Father was talking to God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. And God chose to make each human in His image. What does that mean? That means, like the Father, we can think, imagine and come up with opinions, as well as feel different emotions and have a will to do as we choose. That means like the Son, we have a body with which to interact with the world God created for us, as well as to communicate with other humans. And that means, like the Holy Spirit, we each have an inner being, a unique personality and character, that determine where we place our faith, whether we are inspired by hope and if we will love one another. Our spirit is the inner core of who we are that defines and influences all the rest of who we are. We can choose to reflect this original image, made in the likeness of God, OR we can…well, more tomorrow…
