“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Ps 23:5 ESV
What a lovely image of God preparing a table before us! That means whatever we need to nourish us, God has already made plans to give it to us. Whether this means the courage to tell our neighbors about Jesus, the sense of peace after a loved one dies or overflowing concern for a friend at just the right time…God prepares our table before us. Not only can we have those true gifts and treasures when we most need them, but He has already seen our need, even before we knew we had one, and has set things in play so that we could have our needs met at the right time. Do we believe this or are we still trying to hunt down our own chow, all by ourselves?
God prepares a table before us, and as if all that is not enough, God prepares this table before us in the presence of our enemies! It is one thing to trust God when all seems calm and peaceful, but right in the midst of a fierce battle? That’s a whole other kind of Faith, my Friends! Think David and Goliath here! David picks up five stones that God had placed there for him to pick up beforehand…but then as David flings the stone towards Goliath, God directs that stone right at the giant’s forehead! Please never think we have any victory on our own! It is God who prepares the table and then helps what we “eat” nourish our bodies too so we can be as healthy as possible!
