Being the Helper

God is a God of order and He has set things into place that will benefit everyone in the marriage, family and society. In any organization, there is one who leads and one who helps by sharing their thoughts and insights. Think of this like taking a trip in a car with  your spouse. We cannot both be in the driver’s seat, right? Someone has to drive and someone has to help with the navigation. Once again, this is the order God designed for humanity: the husband leads, protects and provides; the wife nurtures, teaches and comforts; and the children learn to love and obey their parents. This doesn’t mean a wife cannot work outside the home, but her most important role is not being the breadwinner. It is essentially keeping the family together and growing strong and healthy. Ladies, we are in our element when we are being the helper.

We need one another. No human was ever meant to be by themselves. And we know this because it is the first “not good” in Creation. God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Gen 2:18 my emphasis) For me, it is an honor to be called my husband’s helper. Do you know why? Because this points to such an important and vital role in this sacred union. Not convinced? Well let me put it this way, Who else is called a Helper in the Bible? Yes, the Holy Spirit is our Helper (capital H). (check out John 14:26; 15:26 and 16:7 for instance, among the many Psalms that call God our Helper too!) This does not mean we are some kind of super person who should be leading our husbands! But we are supposed to do for them what the Holy Spirit does for us. Let’s talk this week about some of our roles as wives in this beautiful union called marriage.
