In the Beginning

It has been over 22 years since I surrendered my life to Jesus. And while I would love to say that my life since then has been filled with rainbows and little unicorns flying over my head…that’s just not reality. This side of Heaven, we will have trials. Jesus makes this pretty clear in the Gospel of John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (NIV) No, this is not our verse for the week, but please feel free to use it as a bonus verse.

My point is my life since I became born again has been very, very challenging. My daughter, Beckie, was just beginning her 7 and 1/2 year trial of one horrendous miracle after the other. You can read more about her story on my website, link is below. One crisis after the next left me both devastated and in utter awe of my God. They were certainly growing years, as we spent a lot of time in the valleys of life. It was then, right in the dawn of my rebirth, that God instilled, deep in my heart, a desire to know His Word. I began pouring myself over the Bible daily, drinking it in as much as I could, learning to discern God’s Voice from all the rest, and working with Him to implement what He was teaching me. One of the first things He placed in me was the importance of memorizing Scripture. “If you do not have it in you, Child,” He gently impressed upon me, “then you cannot take it out of you when the need arises.” And so God quickly led me to several verses. Here is the first one I ever memorized, it is from the great Psalm 119, verse 105:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Ps 119:105 ESV

Simple and yet it still continues to bless me in so many ways. Let’s spend some time this week talking about the topic that still tugs at my heart, the great power of God’s Word.
