Another area of life where this “it’s not about ME” mentality is a must, is in our finances. Understanding that nothing belongs to us, that it is all a gift from God, should humble us to be more and more responsible with what God has granted us. You see, money, possessions and treasures where never meant to be given to us so we could hoard them. We are supposed to share them with those around us. It is sad that Jesus proclaimed that we will always have the poor among us (Mt 26:11)…but this is a test. Will we become so consumed with the gifts that we forget the Giver? Will we choose to store up treasures in this world or imitate God and invest for the next life? (Mt 6:19-20)
Being a steward for God is an honor. We get to enjoy all the gifts He grants us as they come to us, but them we will enjoy them even more as they go through us. As St Paul said, “…remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Ac 20:35) As we learn to be more accountable with our finances, we will have plenty for ourselves and plenty more to bless others with also. When we give with a cheerful heart, we cannot out give God…that is how God’s economy works.
