This is such a powerful verse:
“Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Pr 18:21 BSB
Hi Friends, Diane here. So if we claim to be a New Creation in Christ, we must become more and more aware of the words that are in our minds, as well as those coming out of our mouths. Both the inner words and outer ones can create life or bring on death. Words are powerful whether they are thoughts or spoken out loud. Yet those we say out in the open is when their power, either for life or death, are released.
So let’s go back to the sowing and reaping idea. When we are thinking, we are planting seeds. Just because a thought comes to our mind, does NOT mean we must think about it. In Christ, we have the power to capture that thought (2Co 10:5) and, if it is death, something negative and unhelpful, we can delete it from our minds as we, on purpose, think about something good. For instance, if we drop something on the floor and the thought, “I am such a klutz! I can’t do anything right,” comes flying at us, we can choose to stop and replace that thought with something beneficial instead. Remember those bread crumbs on the counter? If not, check these videos out (links below).
We must monitor the words of our mind because they will grow into spoken words that have real consequences, good or bad. If I continue to say pessimistic things about myself in my mind, then I will begin to act negatively. If I think mean thoughts about others, then I will treat them cruelly. Are we getting this? Words in our mind are seeds that bear fruit, good or bad. And whatever we are sowing, we will end up eating.
