One of our goals must get to the point in life where we take into account others as we are making whatever decisions we must make in life. And the marriage is certainly a great place to get basic training in this area. If we are married, or want to get married even, this “It’s not about ME” mentality will naturally move us to think about the other person more than we think about our own desires. Becoming one is losing yourself in your spouse because of the deepening love you experience for that other person.
I love the way Jesus put it, “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” (Mt 10:39) You see when you really love someone, you put them first…and in a marriage, if both spouses are doing this, then a new person is formed. This relationship does not look more like the husband’s or wife’s personality, but the two blend, changing each other for the better…that’s the idea anyway. But if we get married and still think life is ALL about me? Well, it is not surprising that we see the divorce rate as high as it is both outside, and sadly inside the Church too. Let’s choose to let Jesus teach us how to lose ourselves in love…it might seem a little painful at first, but it always works out for everyone’s best!
