The Lamp

God’s Word is the real source of power that lights up our lives so we can live love.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Ps 119:105 ESV

Lamp. What does a lamp do? First, it helps us see things that we cannot see in the dark, right? There are so many aspect of our human nature that we simply do not see until God’s Word acts as this Lamp to help us see. We have good things in us, but we also have the lasting effects of sin in us too. As we engage with the Bible, we can see the things in us that God desires to strengthen, and we can see the things in us that He desires to remove.

For instance, it’s the nerd in me that loves to study any topic, that God wants to strengthen in me as He turns this trait towards studying and teaching His Word. But my impatient attitude? God wants to remove that from me so that I can be more level headed, be able to love others well, and also have more peace in my own life too. The Lamp gives light to both of these qualities within, so we can turn to God and be transformed.

Secondly, think of one of those old fashioned kerosine lamps here. There is a fire that burns inside that lamp which causes it to give light, right? God’s Word also lights a fire deep in our hearts, a burning desire to work with Him to begin those changes I mentioned above, and become the person He designed us to be. Then we can go out and be a light to those around us too.

The Lamp which is God’s Word illuminates the good and the bad in us, and as we choose to work with Him because of this burning desire to be like Him, He refines us to become more and more like Him. In the Bible, we learn about the heart attitudes that lead to life, and those that lead to destruction. But the brighter this inner fire becomes, the more we will walk away from destruction, and the more our feet will naturally walk with God, towards that Abundant Life.
